PATTERN

Hook Sizes Needed:

U.S. I/9 – 5.5mm

U.S. G/7 – 4.5mm

Yarn Used:

Color A: 105 yards Loops & Threads Impeccable in True Grey

Color B: 35 yards Loops & Threads Impeccable in Dark Charcoal

Any 2 contrasting colors of (4) worsted weight yarns may be used in place of these.

Gauge:

With larger size hook 12 dc and 8 rows = 4” x 4”

By the time you finish Round 3, the diameter should be 3.5” wide.

Key (US Terms):

st – stitch

slst – slip stitch

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

hdc – half-double crochet

dc – double crochet

tr – triple crochet

2dc – double crochet twice into one stitch

Blo – back loop only

Notes:

  • During the increasing rounds the ch 2 at the beginning of the round does not count as a stitch.
  • During the hat body you will drop the uncounted stitch and the ch 2 and the ch 4 at the beginning of the round will count as a sc and tr.
  • During the hat brim the ch 1 at the end of Row 2 will not count as a stitch, it is a turning chain.
  • When a number comes before a stitch, stitch that many times into the same stitch (i.e.: 2dc means double crochet twice into the same stitch.)

Pattern:

With Color A and larger hook size start with a magic loop.

Increase:

Round 1: ch 2, dc 12 sts into the magic loop. Connect with a slst into the second ch st. (12 sts)

Round 2: ch 2, 2dc into each dc from the previous row. Connect with a slst into the second ch st from the beginning of this round. (24 sts)

Round 3: ch 2, “dc, 2dc” repeat “”s all the way around. Connect with a slst into the second ch st from the beginning of this round. (36 sts)

Round 4: ch 2, “dc, dc, 2dc”, repeat “”s all the way around. Connect with a slst into the second ch st from the beginning of this round. (48 sts)

Round 5: ch 2, “dc, dc, dc, 2dc”, repeat “”s all the way around. Connect with a slst into the second ch st from the beginning of this round. (60 sts)

Round 6: ch 2, “dc, dc, dc, dc, 2dc”, repeat “”s all the way around. Connect with a slst into the second ch st from the beginning of this round. (72 sts)

Hat Body:

NOTES: For a more seamless color change after the first ch in each round pull the color not being used so the slst looks invisible. When switching colors, carry the color not being used up the ch sts by wrapping it around the working yarn inside the hat, making sure it is tucked behind the st. This will make it possible to switch back to the other color without having a ton of ends to sew in.

Round 1: ch 2, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, “sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc ” repeat “”s until the end of round. Slst into the second ch from the beginning of the round, you will be skipping 1 st. (72 sts)

Round 2: With color B ch 4, dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, “tr, dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc” repeat “”s until the end of the round. Slst into the fourth ch st from the beginning of the round.

Round 3: With color A repeat Row 1.

Round 4-9: Repeat rows 2&3 ending on Row 3. At the end of row 8 fasten off color B, DO NOT fasten off color A at the end of round 9. (72 sts)

Brim:

NOTES: The brim is worked sideways to get a knit ribbing effect; because of this it is important to keep in mind that all slsts are to attach the brim to the hat as we go around and all scs are to build the brim in rows sideways along the hat.

With smaller hook size Ch 7,  turn. *see photo 1*

Row 1: Sc blo into the 2nd ch from hook and in each additional ch st. (6 st) Slst into the next 2 sts on the bottom of the hat body (the hdc and the dc), turn. *see photo 2*

Row 2: Skip the 2 sl sts, sc blo into each st on the brim, ch 1, turn. (6 st) *see photos 3 and 4*

Row 3: sc blo into each st, sl st into the next 2 sts on the bottom of the hat body turn. (6 st)

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the brim is complete, sl st the ends of the brim together, fasten off.

Sew in all ends.
